I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground.
So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:
Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned

Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you.
Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust.
A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew,
A formula, a phrase remains,—but the best is lost.

The answers quick and keen, the honest look, the laughter, the love,—
They are gone. They are gone to feed the roses. Elegant and curled

о редактуре текста

Небольшой отрывок из автобиографии Роберта Грейвса (автора "Я, Клавдия") в первой и второй редакциях. Мне всегда кажется интересным смотреть на то, как автор (или редактор) вносят мелкие исправления, тут и там меняют эпитет или предлог. Во мне всегда в таком случае борятся два разных впечатления, и я редко могу их примирить: с одной стороны - что это мелкие штришки, которые вместе складываются в единое эстетическое целое, и это очень важное и редкое умение - находить места для этих штришков и накладывать их правильно; с другой стороны - что это педантство, что голословная уверенность в важности этих мелочей ни на чем реально не основана, кроме авторитета традиции, что эстетическая стройность текста и удовольствие читателей от него проистекают из более важных особенностей его структуры, стиля, словоупотребления, нежели отдельные предлоги тут и там.

Из первого издания автобиографии (1929, Грейвсу 34 года, он не знает, что проживет еще больше, чем полвека):

"The best part of Germany was the food. There was a richness and spiciness about it that we missed in England. We liked the rye bread, the black honey (black, I believe, because it came from the combs of the previous year), the huge ice-cream puddings made with fresh raspberry juice, and the venison, and the honey cakes, and the pastries, and particularly the sauces made with different sorts of mushrooms. And the bretzels, and carrots cooked with sugar, and summer pudding of cranberries and blue-berries. There was an orchard close to the house, and we could eat as many apples, pears, and greengages as we liked. There were rows of blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes."

• different sorts of mushrooms => different kinds of mushrooms. Небольшой лексический нюанс. Не вполне ясно, какой это имеет эффект.
  
  
• And the bretzels => also the pretzels. Замена "and" на "also". Нужно ли это и зачем? Может быть, это сделано из уважения к правилу "не начинайте предложение с предлога", популярному в трудах о правильном английском языке, но не имеющему под собой серьезных оснований?
  
  
• the bretzels => the pretzels. Замена на более стандартное английское слово.
  
  
• carrots cooked with sugar => in sugar. Уточнение.
  
  
• blue-berries => blueberries. Стандартное написание.
  
  
• There was an orchard close to the house, and we... => In the orchard, close to the house, we... Вместо сложносочиненного предложения фруктовый сад стал обстоятельством времени. Насколько это важно?
  
  
• There were rows of bushes => there were also rows of bushes in the garden. Часть перечисления сделана обособленной и завершающей (с помощью "also"), и уточнено, что кусты были в главном саду, а не фруктовом саду, о котором только что говорилось.
