Хочу объединить в одну запись ссылки на три довольно малоизвестные, но очень хорошие и смешные, английски книги.

Во-первых, The Young Visiters, романтическая повесть, которую написала в начале прошлого века девятилетняя девочка по имени Дейзи Эшфорд. По-русски её можно было бы назвать, наверное, "Маладые гости" (но вряд ли её возможно перевести). В этой гениальной повести рассказывается о романтических приключениях мистера Сальтины и девушки по имени Этель; к сожалению, без хорошего знания английского языка невозможно оценить её прелесть.

Я писал об этой повести когда-то, почти три года назад. Тогда мой журнал ещё почти никто не читал, так что, думаю, для многих эта ссылка будет новой, и уверен, что многим понравится. Вот сетевая версия этой книги: Daisy Ashford, The Young Visiters.

Вот два отрывка, которые хорошо передают стиль и обаяние повести: письмо главного героя своему другу, из первой главы, и приготовления к поездке из второй главы.

1. "My Dear Bernard
   
   Certinly I shall come and stay with you next Monday I will bring Ethel Monticue commonly called Miss M. She is very active and pretty. I do hope I shall enjoy myself with you. I am fond of digging in the garden and I am parshial to ladies if they are nice I suppose it is my nature. I am not quite a gentleman but you would hardly notice it but cant be helped anyhow. We will come by the 3-15.

2. "I shall put some red ruge on my face said Ethel because I am very pale owing to the drains in this house.
   
   You will look very silly said Mr Salteena with a dry laugh.
   
   Well so will you said Ethel in a snappy tone and she ran out of the room with a very superier run throwing out her legs behind and her arms swinging in rithum.
   
   Well said the owner of the house she has a most idiotick run."

Я вспомнил о The Young Visiters, потому что увидел ссылку на неё в недавней записи в веблоге Джона Холбо (очень хороший веблог, кстати). В этой записи он рекомендует также другую детскую книгу (то есть книгу, написанную ребёнком): Crippled Detectives, by Lee Tandy Schwartzman, написанной автором в семь лет. Я ещё не успел прочитать, только просмотрел немножко, но выглядит очень многообещающе. Обязательно прочитаю в ближайшие дни.

Прекрасная цитата из второй главы:

"Anne, where are you?" said Sylvia. They found Anne dead with a bullet in her forehead, lying on the floor dying with red fingerprints on the gun and a note which read:

A foolish girl who called the police first sight of me and if you want to live keep the police out of this or you will soon have a blown up Europe and 9,000,000,000,000 dead people including you.

Their parents cried, Lisette screamed, Lee shuddered, and Sylvia gasped and the nurse fainted, but it seemed Anne was laughing. She opened her eyes and stood up. “Good trick I played on that Red Romer,” she said, and all saw her taking a piece of plastic off her forehead. Then everybody started laughing. The nurse woke up and rubbed her eyes and laughed too and went to do research.

Кстати, если кто-то знает ещё какие-нибудь хорошие примеры детской литературы в этом смысле, по-английски или по-русски или на других языках, поделитесь рекомендациями, пожалуйста.

И наконец, третья книга, уже не "детская", но тоже очень смешная. О ней я тоже писал, и тоже давно (два с половиной года назад), так что надеюсь, что пригодится кому-то. Это юмористическая история Англии, под названием "1066 And All That", или, в более полной версии, "1066 And All That: A Memorable History of England, comprising all the parts you can remember, including 103 Good Things, 5 Bad Kings and 2 Genuine Dates". Очень рекомендую.

The Danes, on the other hand, wrote a very defiant kind of Epic poetry, e.g.:

The History of England by Jane Austen (written when she was 13 or so, I think). In general her juvenilia is actually very good -- very funny and on point.

Henry the 4th ascended the throne of England much to his own satisfaction in the year 1399, after having prevailed on his cousin & predecessor Richard the 2nd to resign it to him, & to retire for the rest of his Life to Pomfret Castle, where he happened to be murdered. It is to be supposed that Henry was married, since he had certainly four sons, but it is not in my power to inform the Reader who was his wife. Be this as it may, he did not live for ever, but falling ill, his son the Prince of Wales came and took away the crown; whereupon the King made a long speech, for which I must refer the Reader to Shakespear's Plays, & the Prince made a still longer. Things being thus settled between them the King died, & was succeeded by his son Henry who had previously beat Sir William Gascoigne.

I didn't find them as funny as they were advertised to be. A bit.. I don't know what -- a bit typical, I guess. Once you are acquainted with Lucia's character, the rest sort of falls in place.

Reminded me of "I love Lucy" very much, in fact :)

Well, I did find them charming, irrepressibly funny and most comforting to reread as needed.
As for characters, - there are at least half a dozen of them, all suitably stable and predictable and nice to follow. Ms.Mapp completely takes over a couple of novels,with no Lucia in sight.But that's besides the point, - it is the way Benson looks and writes that is hilarious and warm.

I haven't read ILL, though. Who wrote it?

ILL is not a book. It's a sitcom that ran in the sixties (I think) -- Lucy Rickardo is the main character, and there is a whole cast of characters revolving around her and her husband. There are some shticks, some plots, some laughs, and a sort of similar atmosphere (to me) to Make Way for Lucia

Пиаже в девять лет не пускали в научную библиотеку, потому что это "только для учёных" - сказали, чтоб он сначала опубликовался в научном журнале. Что он и сделал. Надо найти. Правда, это не литература, а биология.

У нас есть эта книжка, купленая в "Shakespeare&co" в нашу первую поездку в Париж. А ещё почти того же автора выходил сборник "Love and Marriage" (две новеллы Дейзи и одна - сестры её Анджелы).
"Mrs.Killick's Luck" by Christina Fitzgerald - ещё один образчик детской прозы (вышла книжка в 1960, с предисловием Стиви Смит и иллюстрациями Мэри Шепард, той самой, что Мэри Поппинс иллюстрировала).
Пока прежний "Контекст" был жив, я даже собирался писать об статью:-)

На французском хорошая книжка Cornichons au chocolat, написанная девочкой-подростком 13-14 лет. Я по ней со своими учениками изучала французский, там простой язык и много классных списков.
