Actually, what I think he's teaching is some flavor of Kook-Sul-Won.
Date: 2006-02-18 11:49 pm (UTC)Abir locks joints without grasping them with the hand so the the Abir fighter's hands are always free to change plans and they never grabb an opponents limb with both hands.Abir is also different since there is never a ''fist'' closed in the manner that most arts employ.Abir is used with hot weaponry by two elte counter terror units in Israel.Krav maga is a term which means contact combat and should not be confused with what is being taught to the public all over the world as kravmaga.Any style or technique that is appropriate for use in the Israel Security Agency(ISA/GSS)or the millitary is or can be adopted by these groups and they are referred to as ''kravmaga'' by virtue of being used or incorporated into the body of techniques already employed by them.Kravmaga in the ISA is not the same kravmaga used in the IDF.
Kuksool is a 'modern' eclectic style martial art that leans toward the classical eastern systems.Once you have seen them both it is very obvious that both systems are very different. The head of the Abir system studied kuksool with its grandmaster and has a 7th dan black belt in that system as well as in hapkido so ppl tend to think that there must be a connection between them.He also studied several other systems. He was trained from the age of three and required to taste other systems to be 'in the know' about them and what their weak points are in order to guide Abir students on how to defend against them.
The Jews of the Hadramaut called ''Habanim'' used this system for generations since (their arrival in that ancient diaspora) biblical time. They were known as fierce warriors and high priced bodyguards for emirs, sultans and tribal chiefs in arabia. Those Jews also have many customs and a pronounciation of ancient Hebrew commonly accepted as the oldest and most authentic among world Jewry. The Yemenite Jews of Haban have for the most part lost their fighting tradition by melting into Israeli society. It is a great thing that Abir is being perpetuated by new generations.I thought you might appreciate this info.Aqiba S. admin@abirwarriorarts.com
