Nov. 23rd, 2008 10:24 am1. Не очень сложный, по-моему, тест на знание американской политической системы; утверждается, что средний американец отвечает правильно на 50% вопросов. Я ответил правильно на 31 из 33 (94%).
2. "The most horrible day of my life": видео с реакцией 12-летних девочек на то, что в финале шоу American Idol победил не тот певец, за которого они болели, а другой:
Дискуссия с (интересными) комментариями - на Метафильтре.

Which of the following fiscal policy combinations would a government most likely follow to stimulate economic activity when the economy is in a severe recession?
A. increasing both taxes and spending
B. increasing taxes and decreasing spending
C. decreasing taxes and increasing spending
D. decreasing both taxes and spending
(I know the answer they want, but that's actually not what we are likely to get in the next couple of years)
Or this:
If taxes equal government spending, then:
A. government debt is zero
B. printing money no longer causes inflation
C. government is not helping anybody
D. tax per person equals government spending per person
E. tax loopholes and special-interest spending are absent
They should specify that it has been this way always. Otherwise there's no right answer, because there may very well be carry over debt from previous years or it may very well be that it means that the government debt is zero.
Their answer actually doesn't make much sense to me: they answer (D), which is incorrect in my view. If that's what they meant, the question should've specifically said "per person." Otherwise -- heck no!
Or take the question about the Puritans:
The Puritans:
A. opposed all wars on moral grounds
B. stressed the sinfulness of all humanity
C. believed in complete religious freedom
D. colonized Utah under the leadership of Brigham Young
E. were Catholic missionaries escaping religious persecution
The correct answer -- B -- is way oversimplified. And in fact in the context of the civics quiz, answer (C) may very well be the more correct one, because it goes to the causes of why Puritans ended up in the americas to begin with (no, they didn't believe in the absolute religious freedom, but they certainly were seeking the religious freedom).
