My grandmother grew up in rural northern Slovakia and she told me very curious thing - when the Wehrmacht retreated through the region the soldiers were extremely polite - asked for some food and slept in barns in the village and left. Then the frontal units of the Red army passed, did the same, some of them exchanged some stuff for foreign books. Then the support troops came. Raped all the women, slaughtered some cattle and stole everyone's food and everyone's watches and alarm clocks. Strange but she still laughs when recalling that no one in the village had any idea what time it was for the next couple of years.
