Гордон Кейн, известный физик-струнщик, опубликовал новую книгу о суперсимметрии, под названием Supersymmetry and Beyond: From the Higgs Boson to the New Physics. Оказалось, однако, как заметил широко известный критик теории струн Питер Войт, что книга процентов на 75 повторяет его же книгу 13-летней давности с похожим названием, тоже про суперсимметрию. Это само по себе не странно (можно считать вторым изданием), странно другое. Из старой книги тщательно вычеркнуты все предсказания про суперсимметрию, которые с тех пор не подтвердились, и заменены на новые. При этом в самой книге об этом ничего не сказано.

Войт приводит несколько примеров таких изменений, и это выглядит просто позорно. Ну типа 13 лет назад было написано "и вот наконец коллайдеры нового поколения такие-то смогут проверить теорию суперсимметрии, и если мы правильно ее понимаем, то скоро получим подтверждение". За 13 лет были одни отрицательные результаты, ничего не найдено, в новом издании названия коллайдеров меняются на новые имена, все остальное без изменений. И так много раз.

Особенно прекрасно, как подчеркивает Войт, что предложение "... мы будем знать, в какой момент подвергать сомнению всю теории, если не найдем этих частиц" просто удалено в новом издании.

Предисловие Виттена, похвальные отзывы Грина и Гросса (все - знаменитые специалисты в теории струн) и все такое.

ну так, зарплату-то надо за что-то получать ) не признают же они, что их теория на данном этапе абсолютно не верифируема и не ясно будет ли вообще, а так же не имеет ни одного предсказанного эффекта за переделами стандартной модели.

С другими теориями, те же самые проблемы с верифицируемостью и фальсифицируемостью. Астрофизика тоже не помогает. Так что, похоже, квантовой гравитации еще лет 500 ждать...

я был недавно разочарован, купив собрание из трех книг Хокинга (http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/6233925/). там тоже повторы иногда слово в слово, и рассказывается об одном и том же. к Хокингу претензий нет (о чем ему еще рассказывать?), а к составителям есть: лучше бы включили "Мир в ореховой скорлупке" и "Высший замысел".

I don't want to get into the "string wars". I only can say that know him from my grad school in Ann Arbor, and I highly regard Gordon Kane as a person and as a scientist. He is old, distinguished professor, one of the biggest names in the field, he is excellent teacher, he is a very interesting person. I think he believes in what he writes. No positive results is not a proven negative result - so he describes the field in the popular book the way he sees it now. None of his statements are incorrect.

While Woit is a "Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics department.., where he teaches, does research, and is responsible for the department Computer system. For the past couple years, he's also been the Calculus Director, coordinating Calculus teaching and implementing the use of online homework system in some of the Calculus classes". His h-index is 6 - at the postdoc level... In science, you get merit by your own research and not by chewing on editing nuances of others. And even if he has issues with these changes in the book, to shame a person like Gordon Kane the way he does being who he is - hamstvo, izvinite...

Woit is a well-known critic of string theory and its public image. He's been blogging about it for years, published a book about it, etc. I don't think his academic standing is relevant at all. In particular, what he wrote in the post I linked to would be just as damning if he was living as a bum under a bridge. Kane's changes (assuming Woit didn't falsify them, which is a reasonable assumption) speak for themselves.

I don't know Kane from Adam, and I've no reason to doubt your regard of him as a person and a scientist. However, he did write a book for the general public, the book does make many claims about supersymmetry, and whether these claims have been affected by the experimental data in the last 13 years is an entirely legitimate question to ask.

Nobody accuses Kane of lying; but writing "I expect that event X will decide my theory in the next few years", and then, 13 years later, editing that to "I expect that event Y will decide my theory in the next few years" without ever mentioning the negative results from X, doesn't look good. It may not be lying, but on the face of it it appears to mislead the reader, who certainly should have been made aware that predictions of supersymmetry have been revised upwards several times, as the accelerators and colliders have been ruling out the previous versions.

An appeal to Woit's non-authority as a research physicist (which he himself is always careful to disclaim, anyhow) won't really change that.
If you look at Woit's post again, it's basically diff output with minimal commentary; the fact that the diff output speaks for itself is Kane's problem, not Woit's.

"I don't know Kane from Adam" - if it is about Ann Arbor - it is a city where University of Michigan is, where Kane works:) Or maybe I didn't get your metaphor? Pity you don't know him. Pity you don't know people who work with him - other people who actually do research in the field and not just criticize what others have done. I'm sure you'd look at it differently. At least search and read about Kane. Look at his face, at least. And compare it to Woits:)

It is legitimate to ask questions, it is not legitimate to ask them in that accusing way. That also addresses relevance of academic standing. The post is in the offensive tone (if it weren't, I wouldn't bother to jump into the fight with strangers to defend the name of my professor:)

When he says "I expect", it doesn't mean "I promise". Expectations can change as the field develops. General public who read the first book and squarmed with anticipation waiting for another for 10 years are rare. His book is for a fresh general public. And what he writes there is correct and legitimate. He is a passionate scientist who believes in string theory and believes it will be proven. He is not trying to misguide or get any merit or profit from it. Believe me, he is sincere in what he writes! I do..


P.S. Public figure - doesn't really make him right. Sara Palin is a public figure. Does it excuse everything she says?
