My Daughter’s Homework Is Killing Me

Статья о том, как отец восьмиклассницы в Нью-Йорке пытается в течение недели делать ту же домашку, что и она, и приходит в ужас от того, как ее много.

Утверждается, что сейчас намного больше дают домашних заданий в американских школах, чем 10 или 20 лет назад, и что дети обычно проводят за домашкой 3-4 часа каждый вечер. Американские родители, можете подтвердить/опровергнуть?

Не очень понятно из статьи, что происходит, если что-то не успел сделать - проверяют ли домашку каждый день или выборочно, как она влияет на оценки итд.

I don't know... From what I can see the homework is fairly small (8th grade and 10th grade, public schools). I haven't tried actually doing it though. Doing the homework may take hours, indeed - but not because there's a lot of it but because Facebook, and Youtube, and some unimaginably sickening flash games websites, and also they keep talking to each other, and they need to call to find out what's for homework, and they need to make/print this pretty schedule for watering the plants and of course this takes precedence over the homework... You get the picture.

If homework is not turned in it's a bad mark, you can (maybe, sometimes) make up for it later during the next few days but you have to be proactive about it which Daniel (15) is anything but. In the end, these marks are part of the formula that determines the grade, and this is exactly why Daniel had Bs and (mostly) Cs last year in grade 9, while taking all the tests flawlessly.

What gets me is that the kids claim that the sheer presence of the turned-in homework is enough, nobody cares if it is actually correct. I think they may be accurate in that, and I'm positively livid about this. They don't let me check their homework because "who cares, it's done". Also, the presentation of the work is so abominable my high school teacher would mock me to no end before the whole class for even thinking to turn in something this bad. A crumpled uneven piece of paper with all kinds of marks, strike outs, erased pieces, with answers on top of back-of-napkin calculations - it's a disrespect in my opinion but they're turning things like this in every day, for years, and everybody's apparently happy.

As you may deduce, I'm of a rather low opinion of our public school system. All 3 kids go to the best public schools BTW, 8-graders to the Northstar Academy in Redwood City, 10-grader to Gunn in Palo Alto.

Плюсану -- я тоже поражаюсь, насколько задания делаются через жопу. И даже не в плане чистописания -- фиг с ним, пусть сдают хоть черновики со следами пиццы, если это грамотные черновики. Мне не нравится расхлябанный подход к записи и решению задач, скрывающий смысл задачи, провоцирующий кучу ошибок, и в результате имеем безумную растрату времени и дополнительную фрустрацию. Выписывать условие задачи? Обозначать переменные? Рисовать эскизы? Проверять размерности? Проверять хотя бы численный ответ? Учить приёмы, сокращающие путь к решению? Не-не-не, у меня нет времени, я ща быстро сделаю всё на коленке! Самым длинным и нудным путём. А потом ещё пять раз всё сотру и переделаю, потому что фак май лайф (и это Los Altos High, евпочя).

Только физик вот порадовал, наконец-то, дрючит и заставляет всё это делать и приучает к гигиене мышления. 12 класс, луч света в конце тоннеля.
