Take, say, such a sentence as the following, which might occur in a work on sociology: "Human beings are completely exempt from undesirable behaviour-patterns only when certain prerequisites, not satisfied except in a small percentage of actual cases, have, through some fortuitous concourse of favourable circumstances, whether congenital or environmental, chanced to combine in producing an individual in whom many factors deviate from the norm in a socially advantageous manner". Let us see if we can translate this sentence into English. I suggest the following: "All men are scoundrels, or at any rate almost all. The men who are not must have had unusual luck, both in their birth and in their upbringing." This is shorter and more intelligible, and says just the same thing. But I am afraid any professor who used the second sentence instead of the first would get the sack.

There was a sociologist who had written a paper for us all to read --
something he had written ahead of time. I started to read the damn thing,
and my eyes were coming out: I couldn't make head nor tail of it! I figured
it was because I hadn't read any of the books on that list. I had this
uneasy feeling of "I'm not adequate," until finally I said to myself, "I'm
gonna stop, and read one sentence slowly, so I can figure out what the hell
it means."
So I stopped -- at random -- and read the next sentence very carefully.
I can't remember it precisely, but it was very close to this: "The
individual member of the social community often receives his information via
visual, symbolic channels." I went back and forth over it, and translated.
You know what it means? "People read."
Then I went over the next sentence, and I realized that I could
translate that one also. Then it became a kind of empty business: "Sometimes
people read; sometimes people listen to the radio," and so on, but written
in such a fancy way that I couldn't understand it at first, and when I
finally deciphered it, there was nothing to it.

Вы учила новое слово: scoundrel.
Отличное слово.
Жалко, что оно не произносится как "skundrel" - тогда бы было еще и "вкусно" произносить! ;-)

Arimaa

Извиняюсь за оффтоп, но я сегодня нашел весьма интересную новую игру типа шахмат/го, которая называется Аримаа. Эта игра специально была разработана так, чтобы быть очень простой для человека и очень сложной для компьютера. В Аримаа можно играть на шахматной доске шахматными фигурами. Есть интересная тактическая часть, но основной упор идет на стратегию. В настоящее время оптимальная стратегия для Аримаа только разрабатывается, и вполне возможно что в будущем будут открыты новые стратегические принципы.

Мне кажется что если человек любит шахматы, но они ему надоели, а Го кажется слишком сложной, то Аримаа может оказаться золотой серединой :)

Привет! Спасибо, но я наверное пока ограничусь го, даже на них время трудно найти, а хочется понять получше. Но идея выглядит интересно, да.

Я очень люблю Бертрана Рассела, и из этого эссе мне запомнилась немного другая фраза: "What I do not find is that I can improve a sentence when I am satisfied with what it means." ("Чего не нахожу, так это того, что могу улучшить фразу, смысл которой меня устраивает"). При этом парадокс: стиль - стиль человека, который имеет что сказать, потому и говорит - выходит крайне симпатичный.

Мне иногда кажется, что нарочитые упражнения в стиле могут бесконечно приближаться к этому уровню, но достигнуть его так и не смогут, поскольку чистое искусство, как поиск нечаянного, дикорастущего смысла, с боем рвется к тому уровню, на котором уже находится человек, просто знающий что-то и желающий это рассказать. Но, может быть, виной тому, в свою очередь, мои дикие представления об искусстве?
