All 213 Beatles Songs, Ranked From Worst to Best

Любопытная расстановка всех песен Битлов от худших к лучшим, по мнению критика. Про каждую песню написан абзац, иногда интересное, иногда не очень. Мне особенно понравились наезды, например:

194. “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” The Beatles (“The White Album”) (1968): The whimsy will continue until morale improves. Definitely in the top five of Most Irritating Songs Paul McCartney Ever Wrote. It took a long time for the band to get this right in the studio. No one liked it; but it was reportedly Lennon who finally sat down and banged the piano part out appropriately. This is a song that isn’t about anything in the first place; the last two verses are the same except for having Desmond and Molly’s names switched out, but McCartney’s vocal gets more and more excited. Newsflash: No one cares about Desmond and Molly Jones.

193. “Your Mother Should Know,” Magical Mystery Tour (1967): [...] The lyrics are inane even by McCartney standards.

132. “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” Abbey Road (1969): A tedious workout. It sounded novel at the time, and there’s some good sound, but it goes on for nearly eight minutes. I respect that Lennon is trying to strip down his work to elements, lose his ego, profess his love for Ono, and disappear to be reborn, all that shit. It’s just a little artless.

top 10 is almost too predictable. No George's song in it though.

Did you realize who was the author of the list? Bill Wyman was the bass player for the Rolling Stones.

what a pompous prick! (his musical career notwithstanding)

204 She’s Leaving Home??? and he is comparing to Life on Mars? which came out 4 years later...seriously?

I think Ringo needs to come up with a rating of all Rolling Stones songs and comment on them :)

I agree although I do like his playing in the Stones. They have many more songs than the Beatles so it would be a looong list )) On the other hand, almost the entire Stones' catalog from the 70's, 80's and 90's can be discarded as crap. I do not agree with a lot of Bill's rankings and ranting but it's an interesting read nevertheless. Also some of the notes are kinda insider's stuff so it is very actually informative for a Beatles fan like myself. Btw, I love that Bowie's song and that entire period of his (Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust...)

Indeed. I would even say that almost everything after 1967 is crap. Not sure what happened and how the highly original stuff like "Paint it Black" etc turned into a tedious and dumbed down imitation of American R&B. The only correlation I could think of is the departure of Brian Jones -- but considering that he was not a songwriter I'm not sure how that could be the cause.

You might find this essay interesting...

Inside Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’s Five-Decade Bromance (http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2016/03/mick-jagger-keith-richards-rich-cohen)

do not worry about the title...it is a good essay.

"...I can’t define the difference between a record that is real and alive and a record that is phony and dead, but I know it when I hear it. Sticky Fingers is alive. No matter when you play it, it’s new. Steel Wheels was old even when it was new. It’s less an album than a product. At some point, the Stones went from writing new songs to writing cover versions of their own material..."

Sticky Fingers (1971) was ok, most memorable for the actual metal zipper on the album sleeve. Imo, it's their last album even worth mentioning. Steel Wheels (1989) came out "on my watch" and I could not believe how shitty and flat it was. All my friends were dying to get the tickets for the Steel Wheels tour (billed as "their last tour") and I just said it ain't worth it.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out.

Damn, what an awesome article! Thank you! Reminded me, among other things, that they did do some great shit in the 70's. Can't deny that... Gone listening to Miss You and Start Me Up (great song and it's 1981!)

Очень многа букаф, ниасилил.

Seriously, he's coming from the premise that I disagree with -- e.g that Start Me Up is a masterpiece, that Sticky Fingers is a great album etc. Everybody seems to like this stuff so I guess it must be me, I just don't get what's good about this music -- as Richards himself put it, to play this stuff all you need is four strings, two fingers and one asshole.

Early Rolling Stones sound so naive and innocent that it makes them totally unique and great, songs like Heart of Stone, Paint it Black, Get off My Cloud -- I hope it's clear what I mean. But by late 60s everything they did converged into this one song, a formula, a product, as the article says. And not a very good formula either -- this dumb two-note shuffle riff, that's all it is. I don't get why everybody keeps eating it up..

да, да, хотел как раз Брайана упомянуть, но он умер в 1969-м. Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967) - their last all-around awesome album, Beggars Banquet (1968) has only one super song.

again, his musicianship is one thing, yet his writings are something completely different... forget the Beatles (which he seems to be somewhat obsessed with and not in a healthy way ;)) he wrote about several British icons like Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Radiohead and his song tone - half-dismissive half patronizing with a pinch of wounded-ego superiority - remains the same...

I love Bowie... his song is from a completely different era. It is 1971. "She is leaving Home" is 1967...between them is a grand canyon...
Wyman writes" "...the subject of the song is essentially the same as David Bowie’s “Life on Mars,” which does much more with it."
which betrays his total ignorance on what happened to the world and young females in it between 67 and 71 :)

I think they are very different and should not be compared.
They are from very different eras (before 68 and after 70) and have very different sentiments.
I like them both but in a different way.
As for the She is leaving home - it was a groundbreaking song in terms of the subject matter tackled by a boy band which used sing about holding hands and please, please me...

As I went down to Dublin city,
at the hour of twelve at night,
Who should I see but a Spanish lady,
washing her feet by candlelight.
First she washed them,
then she dried them over a fire of amber coal,
In all my life I ne'er did see
a maid so sweet about the soul

CHORUS:
Whack fol the toora, toora laddy
Whack fol the foora loora lay

As I came back through Dublin city
at the hour of half past eight
Who should I spy but the Spanish lady
brushing her hair in the broad daylight.
First she tossed it, then she brushed it,
on her lap was a silver comb
In all my life I ne'er did see
a maid so fair since I did roam. CHORUS

As I went back through Dublin city
as the sun began to set
Who should I spy but the Spanish lady
catching a moth in a golden net.
When she saw me then she fled me
lifting her petticoat over her knee
In all my life I ne'er did see
a maid so shy as the Spanish lady. CHORUS

I've wandered north and I've wandered south
through Stonybatter and Patrick's Close
Up and around the Gloucester Diamond
and back by Napper Tandy's house.
Old age has laid her hand on me
cold as a fire of ashy coals
In all my life I ne'er did see
a maid so sweet as the Spanish lady. CHORUS
