That's because you're not an editor. Strange as it may seem to ordinary people, editors are acutely sensitive to things like the presence or absence of hyphens -- their jobs depend on it. I've just been fighting a war at my job over "table-top," which should *not* have a hyphen (it's in the dictionary as one word). Believe me, the things you computer geeks worry about seem just as weird to me.

Oh, I understand fussing about a hyphen. I don't understand the emotional attachment to "e-mail", specifically.
