While we cannot be certain, there are certainly some things we can tell about quantitative poetry and about tonal or pitch accents, based on various contemporary sources. For instance, the grammarians of Alexandria (3rd c. BCE) have left some remarks on Greek pronunciation meant for foreigners, including specifically describing the tone variations of pitch accents. Also, some phonetic data may be gleaned from ancient transliterations between languages, and more information yet from such things as metrical patterns and orthographical changes.

It is in this sort of evidence that Prof. Daitz grounds his "Restored Classical Pronunciation". We cannot claim that this is the way it was, in fact, pronounced, but we can claim that this is a close approximation, close enough that a lot of aesthetic value emerges from the text that is simply not there with the traditional (Erasmian) pronunciation of Greek.

May I ask you - Rita Finkelberg is teaching in your seminar occasionally?

I have a Prof. Margalit Finkelberg, whose original name was perhaps Margareta. Is she the person you mean? She used to teach at HUJI. She now heads the Classics Dept. at TAU, where I study.

Exactly.
Rita is from Margarita (in Russian transcription).
I've heard about your seminar.

Oh, you know her? Do tell!

And which seminar do you mean? The one on Homer taught by Prof. Finkelberg that I've taken this year, or the informal meetings of reading Homer in Hebrew held at my place? What have you heard of it, and how?

*curious*

She is a friend of my parents.
In fact, she told my father (not me), and he delivered it to me.
About the informal one.
