gene wolf on genre (англ.)
Oct. 30th, 2009 01:27 amДжин Вульф (американский писатель-фантаст, очень хороший) зажигает в ответ на вопрос о "жанровом гетто":

Q. Does literary science fiction and fantasy have mainstream respect? Why, if at all, does it need mainstream approval? What would such approval mean for genre fiction?
A. That's a softball. No. Literary sf and fantasy are not respected by mainstream critics or the mainstream professoriate. Neither needs mainstream approval, which would diminish (and perhaps destroy) both. Just look at what they DO respect. Look at what poetry was as late as the early 20th Century, and what it is now.
Now and then I'm asked at cons why I don't write fiction of the respected sort. You know, he is a professor and she is a professor and they are having adulterous affairs, and they are almost overcome with guilt and angst, and there is no God, and scientific progress doesn't enter into it, and just about everybody in the world is upper middle class.
When that happens, I ask the questioner abut Martin du Gard. Have you read him? Have you heard of him? Invariably the answers are no and no. Then I explain that Martin du Gard won the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year H. P. Lovecraft died.

Date: 2009-10-29 11:42 pm (UTC)Gene Wolfe has a new “best of” collection. I never read his short stories, ant that seems like a good introduction. Back in the day, I loved The Book of the New Sun.

Date: 2009-10-30 02:15 am (UTC)"... why SF and other genre and popular writers don't seem to get a lot of respect from the literary world.
To set it up, a brief anecdote: a while back, I went to a writers' conference. I was making chitchat with another writer, a critically acclaimed literary novelist who taught at a university. She had never heard of me. After we'd exchanged a bit of of small talk, she asked me "And where do you teach?" just as naturally as one Slashdotter would ask another "And which distro do you use?"
I was taken aback. "I don't teach anywhere," I said.
Her turn to be taken aback. "Then what do you do?"
"I'm...a writer," I said. Which admittedly was a stupid thing to say, since she already knew that.
"Yes, but what do you do?"
I couldn't think of how to answer the question---I'd already answered it!
"You can't make a living out of being a writer, so how do you make money?" she tried.
"From...being a writer," I stammered.
At this point she finally got it, and her whole affect changed. She wasn't snobbish about it. But it was obvious that, in her mind, the sort of writer who actually made a living from it was an entirely different creature from the sort she generally associated with. "
и т.д. (я у себя на http://anatol-olegych.livejournal.com/6806.html соxранил выдержку на большое интерьвью: http://interviews.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/20/1518217)
