1. Я несколько раз замечал, как Бритни Спирз в своих видеоклипах странно произносит звук [l], высовывая язык наружу - но не пытался проследить, как часто она это делает. А кто-то не поленился и сделал из этого смешное виральное видео

В лингвистическом блоге обсуждают (англ.), почему она так делает? Это бессознательное, причем только во время пения (в интервью она так не произносит)? Или это сознательный трюк, но с какой целью? Может, это должно казаться секси? Может, еще что-то?

Там высказывают много мнений; мне лично по душе версия, что это она так старается подчеркнуть каждый произнесенный слог, что необходимо в жанре видеоклипа, когда лицо певицы постоянно в камере; и что ее научил так делать какой-нибудь видеорежиссер, и с тех пор она продолжает.

2. Длинное и интересное эссе о том, как писать слово "майк", сокращение от 'микрофон': mike или mic. Обе версии имеют хождение; автор исследует их историю и предлагает разные аргументы за и против каждой версии. В процессе вы познакомитесь с кучей других сокращений подобного рода в современном английском, и, вполне вероятно, поймете, что некоторые из них вы произносили неверно.

3. И еще одно наблюдение о языке на основе популярной песни. Я вообще-то не большой любитель так называемого singular they: использование they/them/their в "единственном числе" для гендерно-нейтрального эффекта. Когда-то мне оно сильно не нравилось, со временем я смирился, потому что реально удобно многим, и популярность его только растет. Но до сих пор, мне кажется, singular they несет определенную "элитарную" стилистическую окраску. Им вряд ли пользуются часто в беглой разговорной речи просто для описания кого-то, чей пол неизвестен почему-то; а если пользуются, то именно чтобы подчеркнуть этот факт, не нейтрально. Так вот, возможно, это меняется, потому что это мое представление о стилистической ауре singular they несовместимо с тем, как свободно и неоднократно его использует Эминем в своем новом хите Love The Way You Lie - в рэп-песне, то есть в самом что ни на есть "бегло-разговорном" и "неформальном" контексте!

Про №3 не совсем понял, почему именно singular they. Это как в Русском "их любишь, а они тебе ..."? Пролетело мимо и внимания не обратил.
Тем более что в конце он явно говорит про "неё".

С Бритни Спирс забавно. "Почему кошки вылизывают гениталии? - Потому что могут". Что-то в этом роде - кому-то пришло в голову, что произносить звук "л" можно с высунутым языком. Не глупо. А меня училка по фонетике так и учила этот звук произносить, касаясь языком не неба перед зубами, а самих зубов, тогда получается расово верный звук, способствующий устранению акцента.

В моем окружении - аспирантско-"элитарном", конечно - singular they используют в разговорной речи очень многие (и я сам), совершенно не подчеркивая нейтральности, просто как местоимение по умолчанию. Наверное сейчас действительно больше и свободнее чем раньше.

Про п. 1. Артикуляция у певцов сильно влияет на вокал, соотвественно, мне кажется, самая очевидная версия -- что это у неё такой приём, чтобы более чётко выпевать слоги, начинающиеся с 'l'. И научил её этому скорее её преподаватель вокала, чем режиссёр.

It is quite the reverse; the elite sneer at it as they do at other usages that violate the "rules." It is a colloquial form that has varied in popularity and geographical spread but is unquestionably (and, from my point of view, happily) winning out.

I think you're using a different understanding of what the elite is. For example, imagine a journalist or an academic using singular they in an article consciously, because it's their preferred vehicle to maintain gender neutrality. There's a self-defined linguistic elite out there whose members will sneer at this usage, quite as you describe it. But compared to the population as a whole, the academic and the journalist are members of the cultural elite, and that is the elite I'm talking about.

If I say that, for instance, the words zeitgeist (in English) or respectively несут определенную "элитарную" стилистическую окраску, would you argue with that? They're relatively "big words", and you wouldn't expect to find them in lyrics to a pop song, for instance. I don't believe it to be elitist of me, or dismissive of pop songs, to point this out. It's simply a fact about their sociolinguistic register.

While I agree that singular they has been used colloquially for a long time, I think it has mostly been a "big word". You would rarely find it in texts that have been written from a populist or explicitly down-to-earth perspective. The usage in Eminem's hit song may indicate this is changing. I wouldn't expect many (scarcely any) hip-hop songs in the past to have featured lyrics with singular they.

Есть такая терминологическая традиция в англоязычном мире, проистекающая из орфографии. Ср. например слова pine и pin: визуально можно представить, что в первом есть "открытый слог", а во втором "закрытый", и сказать, что в "открытом" слоге i произносится "длинно", а в "закрытом" "коротко". То же самое можно сказать про другие гласные:

pine - pin
mere - men
robe - rob
bane - ban

Ясно, что на самом деле конечная e тут не произносится, и слоги все одинаково "закрытые", но эта терминология родилась очень давно, когда лингвисты еще не научились как следует разделять орфографию и фонетику. Гласные из первых примеров в парах выше называются "long i", "long e" итд., в то время как гласные вторых примеров называются "short i", "short e" итд. Для тех, кто незнаком с этой терминилогией, это очень странно звучит. Профессиональные лингвисты ей не пользуются.
