Its true and its not true at the same time. From my experience, people who are most likely to become disillusioned with academic life are the ones who only always want the best. This guy wanted to be a professor in top tier university. Well, this is hard. But he had a very good chance to get a tenure track position in a less prestigious place. But he did not want to settle for that! No, no, he only wants the best! Which makes you wonder if he really loved science as passionately as he says he did, or may be he also passionately loved tenure track position in a prestigious university?

If you love science there are plenty of opportunities for you, and I am a testament to that. I did not get my Ph.D. from the best university, but then I never had any intentions of going into academia. I just wanted to do chemistry and I was not particularly picky, as long as I could play with chemicals in the lab:). And this is exactly what I am doing now and love every minute of it.

But if you love academic life in a top tier university, then life is much harder.
