It means " a paper... on which the original writing has been effaced to make way for other writing; a manuscript in which a later writing is written over an effaced earlier writing." It is obvious that every book or article or ... is based on previous literature works. Though it is impossible to write something that was not mentioned before. Every text is " a mosaic of quotations"(from Kristeva on Bachtin`s concept of intertextuality).
