• Наблюдаем за английскими клише:
  
  "sometimes a * is just a *" - 6370 страниц
  
  Самый частый вариант, конечно, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" - 2730 страниц; однако следующий за ним по частоте вариант, который мне удалось найти - всего 130 страниц (banana). Вообще разнообразие вариантов поражает (вызвано, по-видимому, грамматической устойчивой узнаваемостью самого шаблона).

• "От двуязычного словаря к словарю переводному". Очень интересная заметка, на материале русского и финского языков. Сравниваются с переводы нескольких слов в большом русско-финском словаре, и переводы тех же слов, найденные путём анализа корпуса параллельных текстов (т.е. какие именно слова использовали финские переводчики на месте этих, переводя русскую литературу). Напоминает одну цитату из Набокова, не могу её точно вспомнить, что-то насчёт неадекватности словарей.

I like my moose to be moose!

Which raises the question: how does the second asterix refer back to the first one? How come we don't search for "sometimes a moose is just a cigar" or even "sometimes a silly question is just a waste of time"?

And: if I *do* want to liberate the second wildcard from the first, do I need to open up my Unicode tables and find out where that little cross they use in footnotes is?

The second asterix is independent of the first. They're two independent wildcards, flailing away at the Great Beyond that is out there. Theirs is not to fix or patch, theirs is but to match, match, match. I don't think you can persuade Google to coordinate their behavior. So in fact my pattern catches "sometimes a moose is just a cigar", as well as all other nonsymmetric instances. I guesstimate the share of nonsymmetric instances in the total to be very small; however, there seems to be no easy way to go about fishing them out of the Net.
