I would have said that poem was pretty well known, but on reflection, I guess students haven't gotten much pre-Romantic poetry for the last few decades (do they even read Pope and Milton any more in high school?). At any rate, that was an extremely interesting discussion of the problems of translation. One minor point: the poet's given name shouldn't be Cyrillicized as Чайдек, since it's pronounced "Chiddock": Чидок would be more accurate.

We had to read Pope's The Rape of the Lock in high school (Skokie, Illinois, 1996). The fact that it was AP English notwithstanding.

well, it was 10 years ago and in the US.

My son goes to a decent secondary school in London, UK and his curriculum doesn't include these authors.

What does his curriculum include? It would be interesting to compare. When I went to high school, our English curriculum included, for example, Shakespeare, Dickens, Ibsen, Pound, Whitman, Poe, Melville, Yeats, Shelley, Salinger, Chaucer, Camus, Dostoevsky, Conrad, Pope, Joyce, Hawthorne, Wharton, Keats (this covers,although incompletely, grades 9 through 12).

Клиент оглядел список и сказал, что да, он слыхал, что в Америке все это проходят. Сам он назвал еще Г. Уэллса и поэта-викторианца сэр Какого-то (не знаю такого). М.б. в следующем году их чем-то побалуют, но не думаю. А потом уже колледж и он английского брать не будет.
