Рена Сальмон, 43-летняя жительница Лондона, узнала, что её муж изменяет ей с женщиной Лорной Стюарт. Она пришла в салон красоты, в котором работала Лорна, и застрелила её. Сразу после этого она послала SMS-сообщение своему мужу:

Я застрелила Лорну. Это не шутка.
(I have shot Lorna. This is not a joke).

Вот это пояснение, это "this is not a joke", его мрачная неизбежность — не в этом ли суть нашей "эпохи постмодернизма"?

Об этом случае я прочитал в совершенно замечательной статья Zoe Williams "The final irony" (англ.) — об иронии, о видах иронии, о том, как часто иронией называют что-то совсем другое, об иронии и американцах, о пресловутой "смерти иронии" после 11-го сентября, и ещё об очень многом. Статья очень интересная и очень умно и увлекательно написана.

The article is cute enough but it's Jerry Seinfeld all over again - be ironic and do nothing.
Zoe Williams in this great english tradition is missing the point completely, i.e. irony doesn't solve problems for you.

For example, I could say it's ironic that avva tried to convince people at LJ (Brad) that Russian users are not going to try to defraud the system. So what? It's a cool statement all right, but it doesn't deal with the real issue - fraud, not one's good intentions.

There's time to be ironic and do nothing, and there's time to be less cute and start doing something about real life issues.

What's ironic is that even if you withdraw from irony and "start doing something" there still will be plenty of nothing-doers that will ruin your good cause with their deadly irony. This is not a joke.

avva, I suggest a new code: every comment should end up with "this is not a joke" statement. That would make comments ironic, wouldn't it? However, used twice in a row it would siggest that is REALLY is not a joke.

What's even more ironic that even adding "This is not a joke" twice to every post by the compliant folk may not preclude unscrupulous doing-nothingers from destroying the convention by doing exactly nothing. So, to deal with the real issue I propose public random checking of IP addresses to avoid a potential no joke situation.

Это "this is not a joke" кажется мне вовсе не попыткой убрать возможную иронию из предыдущего предложения, а попыткой придать в сообщении однозначность, "совершённость" поступку -- что понятно со стороны прежде законопослушного человека, только что совершившего преднамеренное убийство. "I have shot Lorna" субъективно звучит слишком кратко для столь из ряда вон выходящего действия.
