Может дело в том, что экономическому журналу выгодней чтоб с экономикой были серьёзные проблемы: тогда люди будут больше интересоваться экономическими журналами.
(вспомним как в конце 198х - начале 199х народ в СССР жадно слушал экономистов, почти как звезд эстрады)

Yet far from being the voice of fiscal prudence, Mr Romney wants to start with huge tax cuts (which will disproportionately favour the wealthy), while dramatically increasing defence spending. Together those measures would add $7 trillion to the ten-year deficit. He would balance the books through eliminating loopholes (a good idea, but he will not specify which ones) and through savage cuts to programmes that help America’s poor (a bad idea, which will increase inequality still further). At least Mr Obama, although he distanced himself from Bowles-Simpson, has made it clear that any long-term solution has to involve both entitlement reform and tax rises. Mr Romney is still in the cloud-cuckoo-land of thinking you can do it entirely through spending cuts: the Republican even rejected a ratio of ten parts spending cuts to one part tax rises. Backing business is important, but getting the macroeconomics right matters far more.

Mr Romney’s more sensible supporters explain his fiscal policies away as necessary rubbish, concocted to persuade the fanatics who vote in the Republican primaries: the great flipflopper, they maintain, does not mean a word of it. Of course, he knows in current circumstances no sane person would really push defence spending, projected to fall below 3% of GDP, to 4%; of course President Romney would strike a deal that raises overall tax revenues, even if he cuts tax rates.

Я согласен со вторым абзацем. Если Ромни выберут, он будет, скорее всего, проводить разумную политику.
Но голосовать за него не буду, зачем? Обама ничем не плох.

Я читаю Экономист уже лет двадцать. В последнее время меньше - он сильно изменился. Это уже (почти) не удивляет, хоть и огорчает немного. Я думаю, где-то треть британских консерваторов (то есть, меньше половины, но ненамного) поддерживают Обаму. Экономист теперь ориентируется на таких "новых" консерваторов, на часть либералов и лейбористов, то есть, он примерно в центре британской политики, а не в середине консервативной части, как раньше.

Меня это не очень удивляет.

Редакторы The Economist поддерживают экономические свободы - в частности, свободу миграции (по этому вопросу они, в частности, не раз осуждали британских консерваторов, которые ужесточили миграционный режим) и свободу торговли.

Было бы очень странно, если бы они поддержали кандидата, одно из главных обещаний которого - начать торговую войну с Китаем.

Особенно удивительного ничего, это вполне для них характерно, выше уже высказывались. Но у них всегда есть какой-то пункт помешательства, и в данном случае это вице-кандидат Раян, о котором они регулярно упоминают как о некоем образце финансовой ответственности, и в этой статье тоже - несмотря на то, что никакой ответственности в плане Раяна нет, а его позиции по социальным вопросам резко противоречат позициям самого журнала - или газеты, как он себя любит именовать.
